ReHarvest Ghana is a non-profit initiative dedicated to tackling two urgent challenges: food waste and food insecurity. At its core, ReHarvest Ghana operates a surplus food rescue and redistribution system, working directly with restaurants, hotels, schools, supermarkets, and other food service providers to recover wholesome, unused food that would otherwise go to waste. This food is then redistributed to shelters, community kitchens, low-income schools, and vulnerable households across urban and peri-urban areas. Food insecurity remains a persistent issue in Ghana, especially among children, the elderly, and low-income families, while significant volumes of food are discarded daily due to logistical inefficiencies and systemic neglect. ReHarvest Ghana intervenes at this critical intersection of excess and need—facilitating a dignified and sustainable transfer of food from surplus to scarcity.
Youth Agrifood Empowerment
What sets ReHarvest Ghana apart is its holistic approach. Beyond food redistribution, we offer an integrated Youth Agrifood Training Program.
This initiative equips unemployed and underemployed youth with practical skills in sustainable agriculture, agroecology, and post-harvest handling. Participants undergo structured training modules, participate in demonstration farms, and are supported to launch micro-farming enterprises or join existing agricultural cooperatives. This dual-track strategy, rescuing food waste while building agrifood capacity, seeks to break the cycle of poverty not just through temporary relief but by fostering long-term resilience and economic opportunity among youth.
Inspired by the proven community-powered approach of Food Rescue US, our model leverages technology, local networks, and volunteer engagement.
Using a digital platform, food donors log real-time surplus food availability, and a team of trained volunteer drivers promptly collects and transports the items to designated distribution sites, ensuring efficiency, traceability, and freshness. Our operations emphasize food safety protocols, proper handling, and accountability. We foster partnerships with local NGOs, municipal authorities, and health services to ensure that rescued food meets quality standards and that distribution aligns with local needs assessments.
At ReHarvest Ghana, we take food safety seriously at every step. We only work with trusted food donors who follow proper hygiene and storage practices. Our trained volunteers handle all food using clean containers and insulated transport to keep it fresh and safe.
